All soldiers take the Army Physical Fitness Test or "APFT" every six months. The APFT is just like the President's Fitness Award in junior high. There are three basic events: Push-ups, sit-ups and the 2-mile run.
The test sequence is never changed and soldiers are allowed a 10 minute break between each event. The APFT must be completed in two hours--so don't eat too much before the contest!
Scoring for the APFT is done by converting each event into a point score kinda like the decathlon. A passing score is 180+ and the maximum score is 300.
I took the APFT on my third day of Officer's Basic Leadership Course at Fort Sam Houston. I smoked the run and push-ups... but skunked the sit-ups and ended up with a 266. I have come to learn it's all about the "technique" so with a little practice I'm going to smoke the "PT test" in May. I guarantee it! (Joe Willie Namath style)
