Just within Al Radwaniyah stands the old Republican Guard Headquarters and detention center. Reportedly the personal site for Hussein-led torture, execution and mass murder of his political enemies. Partially destroyed in the 1991 Gulf War, the prison was rebuilt and in full use until the 2003 invasion. The Al Radwaniyah Prison was the principal center for Iraqis arrested following the civil uprising of 1991, and is estimated to have held more than 5,000 detainees.
