VBC's Spring Campout...

About 35 Iraqi Boy Scouts and 15 Iraqi Girl Guides participated in the Victory Base Council's Spring Campout this past Friday and Saturday. The event started, like all Scouting activities, with a flag ceremony...

On Friday evening there were games, a barbecue and a campfire... all fun stuff!

These older Scouts are practicing their casting... with their spin cast reels. They're heading out to Z-Lake by Camp Victory tomorrow morning to hook some Saddam bass. Possibly a merit badge-earning activity...

These cerebrally-inclined Scouts are participating in a chess tournament... that goes on... and on...

These Girl Guides are playing a game that looks a lot like "Say Say Old Playmate" with it's claps and chants...

There was some colorful kite building and flying...

Nothing says campout like a campfire! Good to see the Scout leaders still have their skills... and some kerosene handy...

By the time the fire went up, the hotdogs and hamburgers were ready to serve up from the grill. Our Iraqi counterparts seemed to like our camping cuisine--drinks, corn on the cob, baked beans, chips, condiments and watermelon. My job for the evening was cookie patrol... unbox and set Girl Scout cookies out for everyone to enjoy...

The irony in this photo is a total crack up: The Boy Scout's face says, "I not diggin' this Grape Gatorade!" and the Scouter's expression is, "Mmmmm... c-o-o-o-o-kies, don't mind if I do!"

A little later several Scouts amble over... peruse the after-dinner goodies and ask each other, "What are these? I dunno. What are those? I dunno... you try one. No way... you try first!"

This intrepid Scout was the first to pick up a Thin Mint... and eat it.

Next these two young men try a Samoan... and this was their reaction. And the announcement, "Hey guys... these are good!"

Out of nowhere, a gaggle of Girl Guides descended upon the Samoans...

"No more Somoans... shucks! Help yourself to a Thin Mint?"
(Iraqis kids do not like peanut butter.  Can you tell?)

This enterprising Girl Guide figured out there are more goodies around... gotta wait until tomorrow!

Most folks knocked off early... but a few stayed up and enjoyed the campfire...
