You Know You're in OIF...

When you stop noticing the bunkers on your FOB. Bunkers are our friends. They protect us and give us shelter. When no one else seems to care... your "bunker" cares. Need a "time out" from all the chaos of indirect fire... you know where to go!

Let's take a closer look at these unappreciated havens of peace and safety... our home away from home in Iraq.

This Camp Victory bunker is a pretty yellow & has an Amnesty Box for contraband... that puts my heart to rest!

This Camp Liberty bunker is part-yellow & a work-in-progress. That deep gravel is such a joy to walk through! (My heart cries out for "terra firma!")

One of many Camp Cropper bunkers in POD #5... is rather bland & utilitarian-looking...

Another Camp Liberty bunker... this one has my favorite color of sandbag... "ubiquitous Iraqi brown" to beef it up...

This Joint Base Balad bunker has those pretty United Nations green sandbags...

Here's a Camp Striker bunker... a CONEX-converted style...

Camp Taji has a cool bunker that's patriotically-themed...

Some are old school... 1st Gulf War-style?

And then... some are just plain old! Nice weeds...

This Camp Slayer bunker has ashtrays. Way cool! Got a light, anyone?

Some have hammocks... like this one in JBB. Fun!

And a Cropper CCP or casualty collection point is built using HESCOs... big sandboxes!

Most times, bunkers are empty and boring. This says, "Sad, sad face!"

Then on occasion, they get very full and busy. This says, "Happy, happy face!"

But the best bunkers are the ones that are truly useful... like this old Iraqi bunker on Sather Air Base... Nice, huh!
